Come on out and learn about foxhunting in a safe and inviting environment with your friends in beautiful southern Iowa. We will be meeting in the fabulous Grand River Hunt Country, owned by Rick and Diane Hickman, and located near the town of Grand River. The Mock Hunt begins at 9 a.m. It is suggested that participants arrive at least one hour early to tack up and socialize! Meet new people who share your interests! That is a big part of foxhunting. We are a welcoming, outgoing group so you don't have to feel new to the group for long.
Dress is informal, with the only requirements being a hardhat and hard soled shoes. Tack can be either english or western. We are non-denominational regarding horse breed. Please print out and sign the waiver and give it to the person who comes around and asks for it. A donation in support of the hounds' dinners is welcome at that time, but not required. Before we ride there will be a short introduction to the simple, common sense rules of foxhunting. Then the groups will be off with their leaders, following the "hounds" who will be represented by people on horseback. There will be a very slow group (no jumping, walk and trot); a slow group (no jumping, walk, trot and slow canter); and a moderate group (jumping optional, walk, trot and canter). You may start with any group you like and stay with them, or ask permission from your group leader and switch groups. After the Mock Hunt, a delightful lunch gathering will be held at a local landowner's property and all are invited and encouraged to come for the food and fun! We recommend that you pack a cooler with your favorite beverages, and bring enough lawn chairs for your group. See pictures below from past Mock Hunts. Fun is had by all!
